ICANN is warning brands that the new top-level domain names pose a risk of "intellectual property infringement ... with many unknown entities eager to capitalize on the traffic and illegitimate opportunities a branded website will generate." The body runs a Trademark Clearinghouse where brands can register their names for $150 per year per domain. Advertising groups had warned of potential abuse and had asked ICANN to provide for protected registrations across all new domains.
