A Minnesota House committee has opened discussion about the bond and other financial assurances the state's potential first copper mine should be required to produce to cover any environmental cleanup. Officials of the planned mine and the Department of Natural Resources said they would wait to negotiate the assurances until after the environmental-review process is complete, but Rep. Jean Wagenius disagreed. "This is the right time to me to ask these questions, not when there's pressure to hurry up and issue the permit," Wagenius said.
