Integrating historical literature into history, social studies and government lessons is one way to keep students engaged in history learning,
says Pershing Elementary School principal Tara Wells in Missouri. The school's students are encouraged to go beyond citing events and dates, and place themselves in the eras they study to better understand the characters and events of that time. "We are using history literature, not only to teach the historical content, but also to help our students become more strategic readers," Wells said.
