Children who were born prematurely had higher insulin levels at birth and in early childhood compared with full-term counterparts, and the effect was greater the earlier the baby was born, according to a study of 1,358 infants born in Boston. Elevated insulin levels early in life could predict the likelihood of developing diabetes later, researchers said. The findings appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
