Oncologists can reduce the cost of cancer care by taking responsibility for their practice patterns in the areas of care for the elderly, pharmaceuticals and imaging, two Johns Hopkins physicians wrote in The Lancet Oncology. Recommendations by Dr. Thomas Smith and Dr. Ronan Kelly include better decision-making and end-of-life care planning, such as using palliative care sooner in the disease process, transitioning to hospice and having earlier talks with patients about chemotherapy.
