New retail offerings were part of the Russian government's efforts to highlight its country for the Winter Olympics. Shopping centers had been relatively rare in Sochi, but a 750,000-square-foot center opened in 2012 is fully leased, and a second center is under construction. The introduction of 90,000 square meters of new retail space in downtown Sochi has placed the city nearly on par with the country's average of 109 square meters of retail space per 1,000 residents.
