A review of 37 studies found palliative care may reduce ICU and overall hospital lengths of stay, Johns Hopkins University researcher Dr. Rebecca Aslakson reported at the Society for Critical Care Medicine annual conference. Both an integrative palliative care model that uses ICU staff and a consultative model that brings in outside palliative care experts can benefit patients. Smaller or closed ICUs might be better served with an integrative system, while a consultative model may work in large or open units, Aslakson said.
