SST's ShotSpotter gunshot-location technology is routinely used outdoors but its SiteSecure software can now detect gunshots indoors and provide location information to the appropriate public safety answering point. The biggest challenge to bringing the system indoors was adapting the software to recognize the sound of gunshots in schools and other buildings designed to muffle noise. "You can close a classroom door and shoot an automatic weapon in the hallway, and people aren't going to hear it, and if they do, they won't recognize what it is. It sounds like someone is slapping their hand on the wall," said Gregg Rowland, senior vice president of sales and marketing.
