The proportion of overweight middle-school children dropped from 20% to 12% in a group that participated in a school-based diet and exercise program, while a comparison group had an increase in overweight children, East Carolina University researchers reported. The Motivating Adolescents with Technology to Choose Health initiative included daily physical activity, monitoring and analysis of food intake, self-evaluating health behaviors and incentives to help reach goals, according to the study in the journal Childhood Obesity.
