Insured patients who get a free 30-day supply of a new prescription are more likely to fill and refill the prescription than those who do not receive a free sample, according to a study by the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy's Program Evaluation Research Unit. The study did not last long enough to determine health outcomes, but researchers did note that health care costs were slightly lower in the group that received free samples.
