Patent law is failing to keep pace with interaction design -- how consumers interact with digital devices -- and that failure is inhibiting technology innovation, writes Sohrab Vossoughi, president of design consultancy Ziba. Patents awarded to fundamental human gestures, such as expressing approval via a thumbs-up, are "destructive" and must be revised, Vossoughi writes. Such gestures are "ways of manipulating the world, hardwired into human brains by evolution and cultural conditioning."
