Real estate investment companies such as the Blackstone Group, Colony Capital and Starwood Property Trust have been a key part of the U.S. housing recovery, buying distressed properties to market as rentals. Values are rising quickly in some markets amid the buying frenzy, and the spikes could price out middle-class buyers. An unanswered question is who will buy from the institutional investors when they seek to sell.
