State lawmakers in California on Monday introduced a package of bills intended to help curb truancy among the more than 250,000 elementary-age children who miss 10% or more of each school year. Among other things, the proposals would require districts to report annual data on truancy, along with an analysis of the causes. Review boards also would be established in each county and would work with families to provide necessary services. As a last resort, families could be taken to court if truancy persists.
