The CDC reveals an estimated 2.7 million Americans are infected with chronic hepatitis C infection, 500,000 fewer than previously estimated, according to a survey conducted between 2003 and 2010. However, researchers noted that the decrease may be a result of more deaths due to untreated HCV infections. The survey, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, also noted needle-based drug use and receipt of blood transfusions before the year 1992 as risk factors of HCV.
