Ebola virus

Scientists are closing in on effective treatments for Ebola, a deadly zoonotic virus that causes fever, vomiting, diarrhea and internal and external hemorrhaging and has shown up in a recent outbreak in Guinea. Several treatments show promise, including the flu drug favipiravir, cancer drugs Gleevec and Tasigna, and several antibody cocktails in development. Human trials of a new Ebola drug were begun in January by Tekmira Pharmaceuticals, which has Defense Department funding for the research.
