Contrary to some assertions, the very nature of engineering students' majors in college is a strong indicator of not only their optimism about solving important problems but also of their commitment to public welfare, writes Scott Hummel, the William Jeffers director of the engineering division at Lafayette College. Numerous organizations also attest to this commitment, Hummel notes, including Engineers Without Borders, Engineering World Health and the National Academy of Engineering’s Grand Challenges, all formed in the just the past 25 years.
