University of Pennsylvania physician David Casarett and attorney Thaddeus Pope, an expert in end-of-life law, are using a $50,000 grant to develop ethical guidelines that hospice workers would use for reporting cases of suspected assisted suicide. Their project stems from the arrest of a nurse for giving her dying father morphine in a case that was later dismissed. "Hospice staff need clear guidance about their ethical and legal obligations when they suspect that a family member has hastened a patient's death," Casarett said.
