In 2012, the Federal Aviation Administration completed a study of about 3,000 general aviation airports, placing them into one of four categories: national, regional, local or basic. Of those, 497 did not fit into those categories, so the FAA began a study in January 2013 to allow it to classify another 212 airports. The FAA will continue to monitor the activity levels of those airports that remain unclassified.
