The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has seen a rise in the number of data breaches, denial-of service attacks and other network security issues over the past seven years, according to a report from the Government Accountability Office, which blames the absence of a cohesive cybersecurity strategy, poor access control and a lack of contingency planning for the shortfalls. Gregory C. Wilshusen, GAO director of Information Security Issues, offered details of the finding during a hearing before the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, which is considering legislation aimed at improving the agency's security preparedness.
