Hawaiian Electric will be partnering with Silver Spring Networks to install smart meters and other smart-grid infrastructure for 5,200 of the utility's customers in Oahu. The installation will take place between mid-April and the end of July, the company said. The subsidiary of Hawaiian Electric Industries plans to extend smart grids through other parts of Hawaii by 2018. Separately, the U.S. Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority is putting in advanced metering infrastructure with work being done by Itron and Tantalus.
