The $500,000 CorPath 200 robot is getting a workout at University of California, San Diego Health System's Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center while sparing SCAI fellow Dr. Ehtisham Mahmud from the need to don heavy protective gear to limit his exposure to radiation. Greater comfort and safety for interventionalists is one benefit provided by the robotic system, but "in the end, it all comes down to patient outcomes," said SCAI president-elect Charles Chambers. In clinical research involving 25 patients, the CorPath 200 had a 97.6% success rate while reducing radiation exposure by 95%, but widespread adoption of the technology likely won't occur until more data are released.
