An observational study of older adults in Japan found that men with the highest intake of protein from meat and fish had a 39% lower risk of mental and physical decline compared with men who ate the least animal protein, Japanese researchers reported in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Washington University nutrition director Connie Diekman said that while the study had limitations, it still showed that people need adequate protein throughout life.
