Residents will vote today whether to prohibit or allow hydraulic fracturing in Johnson County, Ill., where the Illinois Basin's New Albany Shale has drawn energy companies' interest. Anti-fracking advocates have expressed concern about risks of water contamination and earthquakes, but supporters believe the process can provide economic benefits. Woolsey Petroleum says those benefits include "new jobs and increased revenue to the states, counties, and landowners."
