Early artists who didn't have the benefit of photography used their imaginations to create bestiaries detailing the exotic animals reported by travelers to faraway places. The resulting sketches, based on secondhand reports, typically looked nothing like the animals they purport to show. This gallery shows some of the earliest depictions of creatures such as elephants, crocodiles, giraffes and antelope.
