Massachusetts lawmakers are considering a bill that would require insurers to cover liposuction to treat lipodystrophy, which is excess distributions of fat due to interactions from older HIV drugs. State Rep. Michael Costello, D-Newburyport, wondered why insurance companies view liposuction to treat lipodystrophy as a cosmetic procedure instead of a medical necessity when the condition causes pain and stigmatization.
