Common shrink wrap forms the base for a new, low-cost type of pathogen detection. In the method developed at the University of California at Irvine, the plastic wrap is coated with a thin layer of gold and nickel then shrunk. The resulting wrinkles enhance the visibility of fluorescent-tagged biomarkers added on top of the shrink wrap, enabling easier detection of pathogens.
