Plastic surgery is one of the few areas of medicine in which the success of the procedure is subjective, and plastic surgeons must carefully manage patient expectations. Typically, changes in appearance should be subtle, but many older patients demand relatively drastic procedures, says plastic surgeon Nick Carr, vice president of the Canadian Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Some patients resort to lawsuits when outcomes fall short of expectations, but they face a high bar to prove the surgeon failed to gain informed consent or the work was substandard, legal experts say.
