Major construction work on the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's $6.3 billion Purple Line subway-extension project will begin next year, but preliminary work -- which includes the initial dig, piling installation and tunneling -- is already underway on a 24-hour-a-day schedule. The project's first few stations are slated for completion by 2023, and the entire line in 2035.
