Several major medical-facility projects overseen by the Department of Veterans Affairs are long overdue and significantly over budget, according to information supplied at a recent congressional hearing. One such project, a hospital complex in Orlando, Fla., is expected to be $150 million over budget and to be finished about five years after its original completion date. The hearing concentrated on the proposed VA Construction Assistance Act of 2013, which is designed to address the problem by putting supervisors from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in charge of problematic projects.
