Researchers at the University of Washington found that two proteins that regulate glucose metabolism are necessary to form stem cells. The scientists reprogrammed mature human tissue fibroblasts by inserting genes for four proteins into them, causing them to go back to an earlier stem cell-like state. They found that hypoxia-induced factor 1 alpha and 2 alpha both play key roles in the stem cell reprogramming process.
