A new consensus document brings together and updates guidance for facilities that provide PCI without on-site surgical backup in a publication released by SCAI, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. The document offers guidance on how such facilities should "structure themselves, how they should operate, and what they need to do to make sure they're going to do this in the best possible way," said SCAI past president Dr. Gregory Dehmer, who led the writing group. Among specific changes are increased emphasis on quality review programs and the recommendation that newly trained interventional cardiologists be mentored until their clinical skills and outcomes are considered acceptable.
