Using gestures when learning abstract math concepts may help students gain a deeper understanding of the material, according to a recent report. The findings suggest gestures may be more effective than physical interaction with objects in helping students generalize learning concepts. "What's surprising about our study is that we showed that actually gesture which is a subcategory of movement that doesn't interact directly with objects might be even better in some cases for learning, and potentially for learning abstract concepts like mathematics," co-researcher Eliza Congdon said.
