Plastic surgeon Reuben Bueno Jr. of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine helped amputate Aaron Withers' arm following an accident. While Withers was hospitalized, Bueno also performed targeted muscle innervation, or TMR, so Withers will be able to use a thought-activated prosthetic arm. Many surgeons do not do TMR shortly after an amputation, Bueno said, but waiting allows scar tissue to form that can make it more difficult to find relevant nerves.
