The decommissioning work and investigation of reactors at Tokyo Electric Power's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan are done with the help of robots. A small remote-controlled robot was able to detect a leak from the Unit 1 reactor's containment vessel last November. "A small army of purpose-built robots, each designed to undertake one very specific task" will be used for the cleanup process, said Ken Onishi, engineering manager at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
