The open-source Big Data platform Hadoop has lowered the bar for small and midsize businesses looking to get their foot in the door to the growing field of data analytics, but polls show many companies still struggle to apply their new capabilities to solve real-world business problems. Jonathan Gray -- who co-founded a company called Continuuity that creates Hadoop-based business applications for developers -- says companies struggling to increase their data-science competencies would be better served by investing in the easy-to-use development tools. "There's been a little bit too much emphasis on the science part of this equation and not enough on the developer side of it," he says.
