An analysis in the Journal of the American Medical Association supports guidelines from AABB on red blood cell transfusions, according to researchers. Limiting transfusions to cases where hemoglobin levels are under 7 g/dL could help lower the incidence of health care-associated infections. The meta-analysis was based on data from 21 trials involving 8,735 patients. The study team reported that restrictive transfusions were associated with an overall risk of infection of 11.8%, compared with 16.9% for liberal transfusion strategies.
