Congress must develop a sustainable budgeting procedure that protects funding for global health research if the U.S. is to maintain its position of leadership, the Global Health Technologies Coalition says in a new report. Sequestration-imposed budget cuts already have had a major impact on efforts to combat infectious diseases and threaten future progress, the Coalition says. Though Congress did reach agreement on a two-year budget, it continues to weaken the NIH, "which is the engine that drives innovation in the fight against infectious diseases," said Coalition director Kaitlin Christenson.
