There are little data about outcomes of underwater delivery, but immersion during the first stage of labor is safe and may be associated with less need for regional anesthesia, Dr. George Macones of Washington University in St. Louis says in this interview. Macones helped develop a joint opinion on immersion by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. "A very important message is that delivering a baby underwater is something to be concerned about, and providers need to know about that," Macones said.
