A study in The American Journal of Medicine revealed type 2 diabetes patients who were younger than 40 at the time of diagnosis had similar or worse cardiovascular and renal risk profiles than those who were older at the onset of the disease. "Our results indicated suboptimal medical attention given to younger patients, in part due to the absence of clinical guidelines targeted to this age group and possibly the misconception of low risks of life-threatening complications in these patients," the authors wrote.
