Prenatal use of antiretroviral drugs, such as zidovudine and efavirenz, among HIV-positive women was associated with a slightly greater likelihood of birth defects in offspring, according to a French study in the journal PLOS Medicine. However, the health risks linked to the use of these medications are far outweighed by the benefits of averting mother-to-child HIV transmission, the researchers said.
