The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatories is a tool that, when it comes online next year, may help researchers track down gravitational waves from massive cosmic crashes. Scientists hope to glean more information about what happens when black holes collide with other large objects like neutron stars, sending gravitational ripples across the cosmos. LIGO observatories are in Washington state and Louisiana.
