There are several zoonotic pathogens that cause scours in livestock, including cryptosporidium, campylobacter, salmonella and E. coli, according to Montana assistant state veterinarian Tahnee Szymanski. Salmonella and cryptosporidium are the pathogens of utmost concern in calves. Proper sanitation of hands and equipment can help reduce transmission of these pathogens to humans.
