A study group is expected in June to release the results of a report on extending by 30 minutes the school day for elementary students in Montgomery County, Md. The report comes as the district also is considering a proposal to delay the start of high schools to give older students more time to sleep. Among other things, the study group will examine how the extra time for elementary-school students could be used, with some saying it could be spent on instruction in foreign languages, technology or the arts.
