Ultrasound is often superior to MRI for identifying musculoskeletal problems, and it's less expensive and faster, according to Dr. Levon Nazarian, a radiology professor at Thomas Jefferson University, but the modality has not been fully accepted by the medical community. Nazarian, a pioneer in the field, explained the benefits of musculoskeletal ultrasound and discussed the obstacles to its adoption in a talk at the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine meeting. Careful utilization, training and collaboration will help ensure support for this essential imaging tool, Nazarian said.
