The Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs in California has launched a crowdfunding program to raise at least $1.5 million. The initiative -- the first of its kind in the U.S. lodging industry -- seeks contributions of as much as $3 million from accredited investors with a net worth of more than $1 million, who will receive perks such as free room upgrades and 25% discounts on room prices. The funds would be used to improve the property's entertainment offerings and its Rock Spa facility.
China Mobile and telecom equipment supplier ZTE have created and tested a high-speed in-flight connectivity system that uses ground antennas. The system got its test on a flight from Beijing to Chengdu. "We're in the air on Flight CA4116, and we have Wi-Fi," a passenger wrote and posted on Sina Weibo, a Chinese version of Twitter. "It's a bright moment with friends surfing the Internet on laptops and iPads in the cabin. There's a look of joy on everyone's face."
Arconics' new CloudStore in-flight entertainment system allows airlines to control the content available to passengers and aims to be a lower-cost provider of that service than typical streaming companies. Airlines can use CloudStore to include ads in the content and comb passenger use of data to determine what is most successful.
Aeromexico will offer Dreamliner service to London's Heathrow Airport, a change that will boost passenger capacity 40% on those flights. The all-Dreamliner flights will be run out of Heathrow's Terminal 4.
Global Eagle Entertainment has purchased the last 6.05% of Advanced Inflight Alliance, completing its acquisition of the company and setting the stage for integration, says Dave Davis, chief operating officer and chief financial officer of Global Eagle. He says the combined company offers airlines connectivity, media content, applications, and advertising and sponsorship options. Read more here.
