The Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa, Fla., helps some 6,000 veterans each year with pain conditions, some through inpatient treatment that focuses on improving function. Patients in the program agree not to use opioid drugs during treatment, and data show that those who stopped using opioids had as good or better pain relief and functional improvement compared with patients who had not taken the medications.
