Mining patients' electronic records from doctor visits has led to tools that help clinicians determine which patients with sore throats can wait to see a doctor, what the risk for seizures is in patients with autoimmune diseases, and what the risk for uveitis is in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. EHR data-mining allows researchers to test ideas and hypotheses over time on millions of patients, says Boston Children's Hospital researcher Kenneth Mandl, who helped create a scoring system for sore throat diagnoses.
