About 6.6 million vehicles have been recalled this year because of concerns about air bags, with software glitches cited as the most common reason. "The more situations you're trying to cover, the more complex your algorithms get, and the harder it is to know that it's going to do the right thing," said David Zuby of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Air bags saved about 37,000 lives between 1986 and 2012, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says.
