Researchers from the ILULU Consortium and the KIDS TB Study Group have identified 51 genes with distinct expression profiles in the blood samples of African children with tuberculosis that can be used to identify TB in 80% of the cases. The findings, which were published in the New England Journal of Medicine, can be turned into "a simple, rapid and affordable test for TB that can be used in hospitals worldwide," lead researcher Michael Levin said.
