The rate of concussion among students across 100 high schools rose from 0.23 per 1,000 athlete exposures in 2005 to 0.51 in 2012, according to a report published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine. During the study period, high-school football players had the highest rate of concussions. The surge of concussion cases is not entirely surprising because of the increasing awareness about the dangers of such injuries, an expert said.
